Epilogue

Central protagonist: Andrew

Three years later, Andrew comes to Pablo's parents' house to celebrate the third birthday of his daughter Isabel. Andrew moved away from them after Pablo's funeral and now lives separately, but in fact he became a family member, and the girl believes him to be her uncle. On paper, though, he is registered as her father: as the patient in the surrogacy program, he substituted Pablo's semen for his own. When the baby was born, he told Pablo's parents that he was infertile and Pablo agreed to be his sperm donor. He never revealed to them who he and Pablo in truth were to each other, and they never asked about it. It seems to not matter anyway because now they raise the child together. The legal paternity of the girl, however, allowed Andrew to get a permanent residence permit shortly after her birth.

Andrew's medical career is steadily progressing. Now he is a resident in a major city hospital, and working sixty hours a week he is happy with how different his professional reality is from what he settled for for years in Russia. Not only has he finally achieved the middle-class material status, but he is also extensively involved in surgical practice and research. In his late thirties, he is visibly older than the majority of his fellow residents, but he doesn't feel any pressure from them and other colleagues about his age, as well as about being a foreigner, which is obvious from his name despite his perfectly fluent spoken Spanish. Impossible as they felt once upon a time, all dreams about his bright future in Spain now have come true, except one — Pablo is not here to share the joy of his days. On the other hand, Pablo lives in his heart. Every single day, remembering the little infinity of their winter following Pablo's diagnosis, Andrew is grateful for the fact that his time in this world was blessed by the miracle of true love. As star-crossed as that love was, it got him to the kind of life he never imagined he would have. And he believes that their love story didn't end. It continues in him raising Pablo's daughter and taking care about Pablo's aging parents.

As a birthday gift for the girl, after the family celebration meal Andrew takes her to the beach for the first time in her life and watches her uninhibited rapture as she discovers what the sea feels like. Much like himself, and much like Pablo, it looks like she will be a lifelong lover of the sea. When they're driving home, the conversation leads her to the point where she blurts out that every Sunday night Pablo visits her in her dreams and talks to her. Andrew is stupefied questioning the kid's sanity, and when she describes how Pablo looks and what he says, he realizes that the she's telling him the truth. From that point, it becomes their shared secret. Isabel says that despite her wondering Dad never tells her why he died, and Andrew tries his best to explain to the three-year-old that Pablo's heart simply broke. She asks if someone could give her Dad a new heart, and doesn't get it when Andrew answers that no one could.

Two months later, on Pablo's birthday, the narrative shows the family reunite for his memorial. After visiting his grave, they have a dinner at home. As Andrew and parents recollect moments of Pablo's life in conversation, look through his photos and videos from his games, Isabel suddenly asks Andrew to take her to the beach. Right now. Her grandparents don't get it: in November, the sea is already too cold. They tell her that this is not a good idea, but she keeps on pleading with Andrew. After she whispers into his ear that she needs to go to the sea in order to make a birthday present for her Dad, Andrew agrees to take here there. They come to the empty beach, and after Andrew sprawls a towel over the cold sand, Isabel asks him to close his eyes and keep them shut as she will make the gift. Ten minutes later, she asks Andrew to open his eyes. He sees a large shape of heart she sculpted from the soggy sand near the waterline. She believes it to be a gift for her Dad, so he could take it in place of his broken heart. She hopes it is big enough so that Pablo can see it from heaven. With tears in her eyes, she says that since her birthday in September, when she told Andrew about him visiting, Pablo has never come to her dreams again. She feels like her Dad is mad with her for revealing his visits to Andrew. She says she misses him terribly, and with giving him this gift on his birthday she hopes that he will like it and forgive her. It is Sunday today, and she hopes that after seeing the big heart she made for him, Pablo will visit her at night. Andrew cuddles her in his arms and says that Pablo will surely come.
